I hear the word superfood all over the place in health food stores, vitamin shops, TV ads, and infomercials. What the heck is a superfood or a super fruit ? So, it’s GOOGLE time and the first hit is wikipedia (careful what you read and believe on wikipedia). But apparently, superfoods and super fruits are marketing terms. It really isn’t a food group. Just a group of food items that are high in particular nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants, and polyphenols. I found this to be very interesting because there is a lot of hype about superfoods. Nonetheless, the research continues and so here we go with a few resources for you to check out.
Woman’s Day magazine has published their list of 52 Best Superfoods. That’s an impressive list that includes a lot of food items across the board from fruits, vegetables, seafood, seeds, grains and fungi.
Health.com has a list as well, a bit shorter than Woman’s Day magazine which consists of
- Black Beans
- Steel Cut Oats
I like this list because it is much shorter and it contains foods that I like to eat, except for the salmon. No matter what list you choose to refer to, I think the more natural foods you eat, that are pesticide free, non-GMO, will be cleaner eating and the vitamins, minerals and nutrients you get from those plants will be substantially greater than eating pesticide infused produce, a bowl of deep fried potato chips or any a high-fructose corn syrup drink or dessert.
If you are committed to eating clean, then it needs to start with your food source and your food choices. So, do you body good, be kind to it and feed it well. In return, it will allow you to do, see, and experience life on a grander scale for a long time.
